Holidays can be a hook bringing people into Judaism

NCEJ provides grants for holiday how-to workshops and hands-on programs that help interfaith/intercultural families, Jewish-adjacent individuals, and spiritual seekers learn about the meaning of Jewish holidays and holiday traditions. Our grants cover marketing, program materials, security, some staff support, and related expenses for both single events and multi-session programs, traditional classes and experiential learning.

For over 45 years NCEJ has given grants for programs that educate, engage, and connect new people to Judaism – including interfaith families, people interested in conversion, Jewish-adjacent individuals, and others who want to explore becoming part of the Jewish community.

Hillel Ukraine’s Passover Project focuses on the themes of freedom and resilience

“Pesach Project” – Hillel CASE, Ukraine Region

The Pesach Project, designed for university students and young adults with little or no Jewish background, will focus on the traditions and customs of Passover, and its contemporary relevance. Hillel plans on holding Seders in multiple cities throughout the region. A key component of the program will be a handout, developed by Hillel educators and distributed to every participant.

In 2025, Hillel held the program in 5 cities, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odessa. Students prepared traditional foods and re-enacted parts of the Seder. This not only made learning fun but also allowed participants to connect with the customs on a personal level. These students were then empowered to lead Pesach Seders for their peers—many of whom had little or no prior familiarity with Jewish history or traditions.

Participants attending the Tallinn, Estonia JCC’s Passover program will learn how to celebrate Pesach at home

“Family Passover Experience: Your Own Seder Journey” – Jewish Community of Estonia | Tallinn JCC

The Tallinn JCC will be holding a 1-session Passover program “Family Passover Experience: Your Own Seder Journey” as part of their “Jewish at Home: Family Journeys into Tradition” programming. It is designed primarily for families with limited Jewish background, interfaith households, and people who have never celebrated Passover before. The organizers will guide attendees through the story, symbols, and structure of the Seder.

The experience will include:

• A family-friendly retelling of the Exodus story, with reflections on the themes of freedom, identity, and resilience-especially relevant in today’s world
• An explanation of the Seder plate, haggadah highlights, and key rituals
• Interactive stations where families can make charoset, learn the Four Questions, practice the blessings, and sample symbolic foods
• A creative hands-on activity: assembling a home Passover kit with a mini haggadah, symbolic items, and a simple Seder guide
• A closing family discussion circle, inviting participants to reflect on how they can make Passover meaningful in their homes

The goal of this program is to make Jewish holidays accessible and welcoming to new audiences through engaging activities, take-home resources, and inviting conversations.

A London synagogue’s Passover program emphasized empathy towards strangers because “we were once strangers in the land of Egypt”

“You shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the feelings of the stranger, having yourselves been strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 23:9)

“Experiencing Jewish Festivals and Shabbat: An Invitation to Discover” – Finchley Progressive Synagogue, London

Finchley Progressive Synagogue received a grant in 2025 for a series of holiday programs that aimed to empower participants to feel confident celebrating at home. Over the course of a month participants learned about the story and traditions of Passover. Students in the congregation’s Conversion/Delving into Judaism class cooked and served the Seder meal, as a way of “leaning in” to the rituals. Interfaith families and Jewish-adjacent and interested individuals were encouraged to attend, and were invited to play a part in the evening events.

NCEJ gives grants to synagogues and other Jewish organizations sponsoring programs that attract more new people to Judaism from all walks of life and backgrounds. We provide grants for holiday how-to workshops and experiential programs that help interfaith families and individuals exploring Judaism learn about holiday traditions. Many of our grantees have used the Jewish holidays as a “hook” to connect new people to Judaism. Learn more on our Holiday Page.

We fund marketing, program materials, security, and some staff support. Program materials include arts and crafts supplies, books, handouts, and related items. We also reimburse for the costs of holiday celebration kits, which can enrich participants’ educational experiences and strengthen connections to the sponsoring organizations. Rosh Hoshanah Blessing Seder Booklet – Funded in part by NCEJ

“Rosh Hoshanah Blessing Seder” – Congregation Or Ahavah, FL

Jewish Renewal Congregation Or Ahavah held a Rosh Hoshanah Blessing Seder in September. The Seder was preceded by participants sharing something about each of the hostages that remained in Gaza at that time. In addition to chicken and brisket, participants feasted on pomegranates, stuffed dates, beets, carrots, and chocolate fish.

Tu B’Shvat activity – “Forest in a jar” terrarium

“ABCs of Judaism” Holiday programming – Hillel Poland

This program was a series of pre-holiday educational meetings designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of key Jewish holidays. The program aimed to ensure that participants not only learned about the holidays intellectually but also connected emotionally and engaged practically with the tradition. Holidays and celebrations included Shabbat, Tu B’Shvat, Purim, Pesach and Shavuot. Programming combined historical and textual learning with hands-on activities, such as challah baking for Shabbat.

NEW! Jewish Outreach Podcast

The purpose of The New Jew Podcast is to encourage non-Jews to consider becoming Jews and to challenge the Jewish community to rethink about reaching out to non-Jews to convert to Judaism. The podcast is a series of interviews; it is a celebration of faith, resilience, and community.

“Introduction to Judaism” – Temple Beth El, Jersey City, NJ

Temple Beth El in Jersey City, NJ sponsors a 20-session Introduction to Judaism class, using the Union for Reform Judaism curriculum. It includes 2 dinners and invitations to numerous social, communal, and religious events. Students are encouraged to craft their own practices and perspectives. Adding to the intimacy of the group, participants occasionally meet in people’s homes, in addition to the synagogue.

“Judaism Behind the Scenes” – Temple B’nai Torah, Bellevue, WA

Temple B’nai Torah is offering a 10-session holiday program, “Judaism Behind the Scenes,” designed for families that are new to Judaism, but open to everyone. It is a monthly gathering to help participants experience the foods, songs, and rituals of upcoming holidays. Families will cook/bake food related to the upcoming holiday; and then, while eating the meal, they will learn about the meaning of the holiday. Each gathering will take place 3-4 weeks before the actual holiday so that participants can use the skills/ information learned to be able to celebrate the holiday at home with family and friends.

“Stepping into the Seasons: Introduction to the Jewish Holidays” – Mittleman JCC/PJ Library, Portland, OR

This 4-session program series, sponsored by the Mittleman JCC/PJ Library, invites interfaith families to explore Jewish holiday traditions. Each 90-minute event, held on a weekday evening, will offer an opportunity for families to learn and engage together. Each session parents will learn about a specific holiday and discover ways to incorporate these traditions into their own family lives. Children will enjoy a craft activity directly related to the holiday being celebrated.

Since 2017 NCEJ has given grants for programs that welcome new people to Judaism in over a dozen countries, including Canada, Israel, Brazil, Spain, Great Britain, Ukraine, Poland, and Germany. An NCEJ Grant Enabled a Synagogue in Jamaica to Connect to the Center for Jewish Life at Beth David, Miami

“Jamaica Conversion Program” – Shaare Shalom Synagogue, Kingston, Jamaica & The Center for Jewish Life at Beth David, Miami, FL

The Shaare Shalom Conversion Program was a year-long program of Judaic studies for over 20 people who were interested in converting to Judaism. They were taught remotely by Rabbi Adam Gindea at the Center for Jewish Life at Beth David, Miami. Students met monthly, exploring the Jewish calendar and traditions, and participated in the weekly Torah study group and other virtual programming offered in Miami. Rabbi Adam also met one-on-one with the students as part of the conversion process.

A formal conversion ceremony was held in June in Jamaica. The ritual immersion was in the ocean waters outside Kingston.

NCEJ is Funding Conversion Classes in Ukraine offered by the Midreshet Schechter Institute

Family Camp – Midreshet Schechter, Ukraine

More people with Jewish roots in Ukraine are discovering their Jewish heritage, and some of them ultimately decide to convert to Judaism. Candidates interested in converting study with the Midreshet Schechter rabbi for one to two years, and take part in Jewish community life. The program is held in several cities in Ukraine, including Kyiv and Odessa. In preparation, students must attend a local synagogue for Shabbat activities at least once a week, plus conversion classes. The culmination of the conversion classes occurs at a 4-day retreat, followed by a conversion ceremony.

Building Jewish Identity – The retreat gives families – Jewish, intermarried, and those converting – the experience of a week together in the country, learning how to observe Shabbat and bring Jewish tradition into their homes, and helps them build Jewish identity as a family.

NCEJ’s grant to the Israel Reform Movement for a program for interfaith families from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) helped connect many to Judaism at an unexpectedly challenging time.

Jewish renewal for interfaith Russian and Ukrainian refugees and immigrants – The Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism, Israel

NCEJ gave a grant to the Israel Reform Movement in 2023 for a year-long Jewish renewal program for interfaith Russian and Ukrainian refugees and immigrants (who arrived within the past 5 years). The goal was to encourage engagement with Judaism through introductory classes and workshops, online activities, holiday and Shabbat celebrations, lifecycle events, and conversion (for those interested).

Hundreds of people attended Shabbat and holiday prayer services during the year, with a large segment coming from interfaith families. Many families learned about holiday rituals and customs by coming to community-based holiday celebrations.

“What I feel isn’t just about candles, or history; it is about the miracle of belonging, my personal Hanukkah miracle… My deepest and sincerest thanks to NCEJ for making all that happens at Kehillat Shirat HaGan possible, and therefore making my life here so much deeper and richer.” – participant

Thirty young adults in the program recently completed a leadership course, and learned how to lead a Kabbalat Shabbat service and facilitate Jewish life cycle events. The new leaders plan on publicizing the program via social media and other digital methods, to bring in more participants.

NCEJ helps support JDC’s Jewish renewal efforts in Central and Eastern Europe

Joint Distribution Committee – (JDC), Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Budapest and Hungary

NCEJ has given grants to JDC since 2017, for programs in Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Hungary. In 2023 we helped engage young people with Judaism at Camp Szarvas, located near Budapest. Many Szarvas campers come from Central and Eastern Europe, and learn about their Judaism for the first time. Some are from communities where their Jewish heritage may have been hidden for generations, or where interfaith relationships are common.

The camp offers participants an entry to Jewish life, and gives them the tools to be Jewish leaders in their own communities. When they return home they are able to increase the involvement of their friends and families with Judaism.

NCEJ helped fund holiday celebrations at the JCC Budapest and JCC Riga

“With the support of the National Center to Encourage Judaism, this year thousands of people in Hungary and Latvia strengthened their Jewish knowledge and identity and connected to the Jewish community through the JCC Budapest and JCC Riga.”

In Budapest, Ukrainian refugees joined the JCC community for a reading of Megillat Esther and a Purim costume party. In Riga, at Passover families from a variety of Jewish backgrounds learned about the holiday and its traditions, played Passover-themed games, and tried out Israeli dancing.

NCEJ helps fund an Inclusive Outreach Seder at Temple Shalom, Manitoba

Inclusive Outreach Pesach Seder – Temple Shalom Manitoba, Winnipeg Canada

This past year Temple Shalom, Manitoba received an unprecedented number of inquiries from people who wanted to learn more about Judaism. In April the congregation held an “Inclusive Outreach” 2nd night Seder. It was geared towards people attending a Seder for the first time including recent Jews by Choice and those considering journeying into Judaism. Everyone who wanted to come was welcomed. Everything that was sung or said in Hebrew had the accompanying transliteration and translation to make it accessible to all.

“Jewish Makerspace” – Temple B’nai Torah, Bellevue, WA

Jewish Makerspace is a hands-on opportunity for families to learn about and begin to experience Jewish holidays. It will be open once a month from 10 am- 3 pm, focusing on one holiday each time. The goal of each gathering is for individuals to learn how to celebrate an upcoming Jewish holiday and also walk away with handmade ritual items. The program is geared towards learners of all backgrounds.

Marketing: The program will be promoted on an online/print Seattle magazine for families, and on Instagram and Facebook. In addition, flyers will be distributed locally and postcards will be sent out to the synagogue’s full mailing list.

“Jewish Trails” – Congregation Shma Koleinu, Bellaire, TX

Congregation Shma Koleinu in Houston will be offering “Jewish Trails,” a monthly program starting in Fall 2023, designed to empower interfaith/intercultural/low-non-practicing parents to raise Jewish children.

Sara Chen, program coordinator, says “It is geared towards families that feel on the outside of Judaism but don’t know how to begin to teach/celebrate the Jewish life cycle with their young children.”

Each session will have an art project done by parents and children together. Here are some examples:

• “Shabbat Shiners” and Shabbat to go kit – Shabbat candleholders made with little flashlights
• Blessing Trail Markers
• DIY Hanukkiah at a local ceramic studio.

Marketing: The program will be marketed on social media, YouTube, and flyers/mailings to local schools/preschools.
Program Materials: The NCEJ grant will help CSK provide arts and crafts supplies and for special programs such as a bookbinding class.

Rosh Hoshanah

“Apple Jews” – Hillel Minsk

During the program the organizers introduced the participants to the history and traditions of Rosh Hoshanah. Attendees also learned about other events offered by Hillel Minsk.

Tu b’Sh’vat

Tu b’Shvat Terrariums – The JCC of Greater Pittsburgh

The Tu b’Shvat Celebration reminded families of their connection to the earth and in particular to the land of Israel. The terrariums reminded participants of the importance of our natural resources and of the Jewish people’s connection to Eretz Yisrael.

“Much like Jewish tradition teaches that we should plant trees not for ourselves, but for the generations to come, Tu b’Shvat Terrariums will plant the seeds of Judaism for the next generation.”

Purim

Purim Celebration – Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism

The program included a Megillah reading, festive feast, costume competition, and a Mishloach Manot (Purim basket) parcel delivery. The registered participants were Russian-speaking interfaith individuals.

Passover

Online Passover Activities – Joint Distribution Committee, Latvia

Activities included a culinary class on making desserts from matzah, a model family seder, a session of Pesach songs, a Pesach “board game” for younger children, and an online Zoom quest called “Escaping Egypt” for young adults.

Many grantees use Facebook, Instagram, and Google ads to attract participants. Some have also found it effective to advertise in local media (both print and online) and hyperlocal media (such as online blogs). In addition, grantees have used postcards, lawn signs, and banners to publicize their programs.

We fund programs that have never been offered before…as well as programs that have been offered many times in the past–as long as our eligibility guidelines are met. Visit our Grant Process page for more details.

Taste of Judaism® – Congregation Keneseth Israel, Allentown PA

Keneseth Israel’s most recent Taste® class was in-person. NCEJ funds were used primarily for advertising. Staff provided their teaching expertise gratis. Some grant funds were also used to pay security costs.

Thirty-three students registered for this year’s course. In 2018 and 2019 almost 60 people took the 3-session class. For the synagogue the course serves as an entry-point for further engagement and hopefully membership into the KI community. The synagogue plans on offering Introduction to Judaism in spring 2022.

Marketing: Martina Obenski, Taste® coordinator, reports that the overwhelming majority of participants cited the advertisements in local papers as their primary source of information about the class.

Information on the KI website accounted for the remaining registrants. Some also mentioned the lawn signs on the synagogue’s property.

Jewish Essentials Class – The Jewish Federation of Raleigh-Cary (Fall 2021)

Jewish Essentials activity take-home kit (funded in part by NCEJ)

For the first time since Covid began, the Raleigh-Cary Federation offered its Jewish Essentials class in-person last fall. The class is taught by area rabbis, and offers an overview of Jewish holidays and life-cycle events for people interested in conversion, interfaith couples, and Jews wishing to refresh their childhood religious education.

Fifteen students registered for the class. Each participant received an “Intro to Judaism” kit that included the supplemental reading “Living Judaism” by Wayne Dosick.

Advertising: The NCEJ grant enabled the Federation to increase marketing and bring in more people. They increased the budget for Facebook advertising, and also advertised in other places.

Jewish Ritual Kits: Jorie Slodki, Grants and Content Manager, commented that the kits the students received made them feel more connected to the Jewish community. The kits contained candlesticks/candles, grape juice, challah covers, gelt, and dreidels.

Student Suggestions

“This class was a confirmation that conversion to Judaism is indeed the right path for me. My next step will be contacting a rabbi for further study.”

• Students would like a virtual option to always be available so that the class could be accessible for people with health concerns.
• They also said that they would like class materials to be available in languages other than English for students who need it.

Pop-Up Judaism – Kehillah Richmond (Jewish Holidays 2022)

Kehillah Richmond – Jewish Learning Cafe

Kehillah Richmond provides an entry point for Judaism for many people who would like to engage Jewishly but are not sure if the institutional Jewish community is right for them. The program is geared to people who do not identify as Jewish as well as interfaith families. For 2022 Kehillah plans on having pop-ups for the major holidays at an event space in a Richmond neighborhood and at other locations.

Marketing: At each pop-up Kehillah will be promoting upcoming events. Marketing materials will include booklets, flyers, posters, and postcards. Print materials will also be available at public spaces and community events.

Program Materials: Kehillah will have give-aways at each event, such as inexpensive Judaica related to a specific holiday. In addition, there will be small desserts related to the holiday, such as hamentashen for Purim.

Conversion and Interfaith Programming for Interfaith Families – Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism

Israel Reform (IMPJ) has received several grants for holiday programs geared towards families from Russian speaking backgrounds. The newest grant is for year-long programming, and includes experiential learning, classes, and other outreach events to educate, engage and connect interfaith families and non-Jews with Judaism.

Marketing: IMPJ uses a variety of marketing methods to increase attendance for both virtual and in-person programs. These include social media (both organic and promoted), interviews on traditional media (Russian-Israeli TV and radio channels), articles posted on digital community platforms such as forums and blogs that have high readership, banners and flyers, and word of mouth/phone calls to invite local community members.

Program Materials: IMPJ plans on using the NCEJ grant to develop Jewish celebration kits that will include small food items for holiday customs, ritual items, games, and activities, and holiday blessings. A graphic designer will create downloadable mini-kits. The grant will also be used to purchase books and other printed materials that students can use in conversion classes. There will also be musical accompaniment for family-friendly prayer services.

Our Marketing Gallery is chock-full of examples, ranging from Facebook and Instagram ads to print flyers, postcards, and brochures. NCEJ reimburses for some of the costs for graphic design and printing, and for email marketing campaigns directly attributable to a specific program. We encourage grantees to use NCEJ funds to expand their marketing efforts beyond their own networks and national online advertisers.

Congregation Ner Tamid sponsors Taste of Judaism® every spring

In 2020 and 2021 the course was offered via Zoom.

Advertising: Ner Tamid advertises in local newspapers and via social media. Many people also sign up by word of mouth.

One participant from last year’s class commented:

“After taking this course I feel like I am one step closer to my goal of conversion to Judaism… but nothing compares to being in a learning environment with other students. I learn from others’ questions.”

Temple Emanu-el Tucson Advertises Taste® Extensively

Temple Emanu-el Tucson (TE) held 2 sets of 3 2-hour classes via Zoom in 2020-2021. Each class normally includes literal tastes of Judaism, but in 2020-2021 due to Covid participants received recipes instead of food.

Advertising: The Union for Reform Judaism provided the social media advertising. TE advertised via synagogue emails, local papers (both print and online), and also on public radio.

What Worked Well – Tips and Advice:

Marketing and Teacher Styles

• The class was promoted using a mix of different marketing methods to reach a diverse audience.
• Students liked having multiple teachers since teaching styles varied.

Virtual Programming Compared to In-Person

The coordinator, Abby Limmer, commented that in-person offers a number of advantages:

• Students have the opportunity to taste traditional Jewish foods, which helps create class cohesion.
• She also noted that when she called students from her cell phone some wouldn’t answer because it was an unfamiliar number, whereas they would have answered if she called from a phone at the synagogue.

Format of Future Programming: Some Classes Remote, Some In-Person

Temple Emanu-el plans on offering 2 sets of classes remotely, and 2 sets in person. If Covid guidelines permit, TE will include literal tastes of Jewish food at the in-person classes. In the past, volunteers provided the desserts and the congregation purchased the rest (such as latkes and applesauce), which reduced costs.

Congregation Keneseth Israel, PA offers A Taste of Judaism® class every year

Martina Obenski, program coordinator, notes that Taste® is often a stepping stone into further exploration of Judaism. The congregation has found that 62% of participants register for their 6-week Introduction to Judaism class.

The NCEJ grant has enabled KI to market to a wider audience. In 2018-19 almost 60 individuals from various faith backgrounds were introduced to the core concepts of Judaism.

Ideas Gleaned From Our Grantees

Richmond Kehilla’s “Interested in Judaism” online class featured a multimedia approach

Kehillah Richmond: “Being Jewish” banner (funded in part by NCEJ)

Rabbi Patrick’s “Interested in Judaism” program provided an introduction to Judaism education through materials available on their website, as well as weekly virtual classes. These classes combined people interested in becoming Jewish, as well as those wishing to learn more outside of conversion.

Students had the option to learn on their own using a variety of media (video, audio, etc), rather than relying solely on workbooks or other printed materials. Each week participants reviewed the “Being Jewish” learning materials available on the kehillah’s website, followed by an online group discussion.

Thanks to NCEJ, Richmond Kehillah has:

Brought eight new people into the Jewish peoplehood the last 2 years

Temple Beth Shalom, Hudson OH plans follow-up to first Judaism 101 course

Temple Beth Shalom, located on the fringes of the metropolitan areas of both Akron and Cleveland, has about 100 family units. Rabbi Michael Ross has taught the course at previous congregations but this is the first time it has been offered at Beth Shalom.

What Worked:

Hiring a Zoom stage manager was hugely helpful in coordinating the moving pieces each week, and coordinating communication among the group.
The in-person outdoor dinner and service at the end helped connect participants to each other and the congregation.

Rabbi Ross plans on offering a 3-session “Art of Prayer”. He also intends to add some contemporary topics the next time he teaches Judaism 101.

Compliments to Congregation Sha’ar Zahav San Francisco for hosting Judaism 101 and a Journey to Judaism discussion group year after year

Sha’ar Zahav, San Francisco – Judaism 101, Banner Ad (funded in part by NCEJ)

Sha’ar Zahav has been an NCEJ grantee for many years. Judaism 101 is a ten-session Introduction to Judaism course for people who are new or returning to Judaism and looking for a starting point to dive into Jewish learning or practice. In 2020 all sessions were via Zoom. The class covers everything from Torah to Israel, spirituality to ethics, through a queer-positive, progressive, inclusive Jewish lens with plenty of room for questions.

The Journey to Judaism discussion group is designed to engage individuals in meaningful discussions that furthers their Jewish education, and fosters the connection to other individuals in the community. The group creates a comfortable environment for exploration.

As part of the discussion group new Jews by choice tell their stories. The groups are facilitated by trained volunteer members of the congregation. The group is closed after the second session for greater confidentiality. Many individuals who convert at the synagogue have participated in the discussion group.

How Grantees Are Connecting Interfaith Families to Judaism in New Ways

Many NCEJ grantees are using a combination of hands-on kits and innovative virtual programming to reach interfaith and new Jew-by-choice families during a pandemic. The kits give families an activity to do at home, even if they choose not to participate in the online sessions, and help to actively engage all participants.

The JCC of Greater Pittsburgh’s “Home to Home” holiday celebrations help create Jewish memories

The goal of the JCCPGH’s Home to Home programming is to “support and encourage interfaith families who are just beginning the journey to make Judaism a part of their lives.” In the fall, families received a welcome kit, and then picked up a “Jewish Celebration Kit” prior to each holiday. 60 families picked up at least one kit. Each Zoom session was 45 minutes. Danielle West, PJ Library Coordinator, reports that the sessions created opportunities for friendship, invaluable during a time when activities were limited. The JCCPGH is doing a similar program this season, focusing on Pesach, Shavuot, and other spring holidays. NCEJ is currently funding a variety of virtual programs for interfaith families, people in the process of conversion, and others who are exploring becoming part of the Jewish community.

Nashville Jewish Federation’s “Building Sacred Spaces” seeks to engage interfaith / intermarried couples in Jewish conversations

The goal of the one-year program, according to Adam Bronstone, director of planning, is to help these individuals and families “establish a Jewish identity and traditions in their respective homes.” NCEJ funding will be used to design meaningful content, including the development of kits containing ritual items such as candlesticks and cooking materials for sessions on traditional Jewish foods. The program will be marketed through social media and word-of-mouth.

The Jewish Enrichment Center of Chicago provides an entry point into Judaism for families with young children

Jewish Play Take Home Kit (credit: Jewish Enrichment Center Chicago)

JEC’s Family Jewish program sends play kits to participants, filled with developmentally appropriate play materials, craft projects, song sheets, and information about Jewish holidays and topics. The materials give adults the content knowledge and confidence to bring Judaism into their families lives, regardless of their Judaic background. For example, the fall series play kits offered family pretend play prompts for Rosh Hashanah (phrases to use with imaginary play), information on the origin of the Sukkot holiday, Chanukah candle lighting blessings, recipes, and more. Many people heard about the program through word of mouth or the JEC’s own website. NCEJ grant funding enabled JEC to advertise in several local online publications and on Facebook and Instagram, which brought in families they would not have reached through other means.

“(The) program has been an overwhelming success… the craft projects, authentic Jewish materials, and information for parents… encourage Jewish play at home and offer basic Jewish knowledge to parents.”

Recent Grant Highlights

JCC Tallinn in the Jewish Community of Estonia

NCEJ renews Joint Distribution Committee grant for outreach programming in Latvia and Estonia

JDC’s programs at the JCCs in Riga and Tallinn provide a welcoming Jewish home to individuals who have recently discovered they have Jewish roots and are interested in developing their Jewish identity. Newly affiliated Jews experience the richness of Shabbat and Jewish holidays through a range of on-line and in-person celebrations. This (pictured right) took place during a brief relaxing of social distancing restrictions, and people welcomed the opportunity to reconnect to their newfound community.

In the coming year a variety of virtual educational, cultural, and social activities will help connect people with Judaism, including pluralistic holiday and Shabbat celebrations designed for people of all ages, youth clubs to engage teens in Jewish life, community service and volunteer activities, and social activities such as Jewish cooking lessons, and virtual tours of Israel. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and actively explore what being Jewish can mean to them.

Hillel CASE (Central Asia/Southeastern Europe) offered “Let My People Grow” Passover program

NCEJ awarded a grant to Hillel CASE for a Passover program. This year’s grant was used for holiday kits to enable participants to create a Seder at home, in addition to learning about Passover traditions online.

“We are sure that over the past months we have taken a special place in the lives of our students and we are confident that they are not alone but together with their big Jewish Hillel family”

Kolot Mayim, a small synagogue in British Columbia, receives grant to adapt Intro to online format

Kolot Mayim Reform Congregation used an NCEJ grant to adapt PowerPoint presentations, create break-out sessions, and research and develop visual materials that would help sustain participants’ interest online. The 20-week basic Judaism virtual class was preceded by a 3-week overview “Nosher’s Plate.” The evaluation noted several benefits of online learning, including allowing participation by people who would find it difficult to attend a class in person, such as people with mobility issues or who live a significant distance from the synagogue. Many of the students regularly attended online services and other synagogue programs. There was a high level of interaction with the rabbi, through emailed questions and regularly scheduled meetings.
