NCEJ grantees use a variety of marketing channels to publicize their programs

Many grantees use Facebook, Instagram, and Google ads to attract participants. Some have also found it effective to advertise in local media (both print and online) and hyperlocal media (such as online blogs). In addition, grantees have used postcards, lawn signs, and banners to publicize their programs.

We fund programs that have never been offered before…as well as programs that have been offered many times in the past–as long as our eligibility guidelines are met. NCEJ funds were used primarily for advertising. Staff provided their teaching expertise gratis. Some grant funds were also used to pay security costs.

Thirty-three students registered for this year’s course. In 2018 and 2019 almost 60 people took the 3-session class. For the synagogue the course serves as an entry-point for further engagement and hopefully membership into the KI community. The synagogue plans on offering Introduction to Judaism in spring 2022.

Marketing: Martina Obenski, Taste® coordinator, reports that the overwhelming majority of participants cited the advertisements in local papers as their primary source of information about the class.

“We would not be able to fund the advertising for the local media outlets without the assistance of the grant monies.”
– Martina Obenski, Taste® Coordinator

Information on the KI website accounted for the remaining registrants. Some also mentioned the lawn signs on the synagogue’s property.

NCEJ gave out an umbrella grant in 2018 to the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) for 10 subgrants to federations located in small to medium-size cities. The programs ranged from activities geared to PJ library participants (many of whom are intermarried) to discussion groups and holiday events for adults.

Family Fun at PJ Simchas Event, Raleigh-Cary, NC

Cities receiving subgrants included Buffalo, Indianapolis, Tampa, Chattanooga, Albany, Charleston, and Raleigh/Cary.

Here are some tips from them for anyone else considering a similar outreach effort:

The “connector” model was a more effective way of reaching families than other methods. Federations relied on individuals with backgrounds that were similar to the prospective audience to recruit participants. The personal approach took more time than other approaches but resulted in higher attendance.

Discussion groups offer an informal opportunity to talk about Jewish beliefs and values. The grant encouraged creative ways of reaching people who do not identify as Jewish and who previously had minimal interaction with the local Jewish community. For example, Tampa offered art and activities for small children while the parents conversed and Charleston offered monthly playgroups and holiday get-togethers.

There is a market for introduction to Judaism classes, even in communities that have not previously offered them. Babysitting made it easier for families with children to attend, and collaboration with clergy of different denominations provided a more well-rounded experience for participants. Portland, Maine’s class “Welcome to Judaism” included trips to area synagogues.

Discussions with people who are intermarried and active in Jewish life shows participants they can find a home in Judaism.

Concrete education accompanied by hands-on-activities helps interfaith families build Jewish homes that work for them. In Orange County, NY a monthly federation initiative introduced families to welcoming ceremonies for newborns and other life-cycle rituals, along with details on celebrating Shabbat and other holidays. It also provided a place to talk through challenging issues that may be faced by families where one partner is not Jewish, such as “How can the non-Jewish family be educated and included in these practices?”

People are receptive to learning about Judaism in a small group setting. In several cities the non-Jewish partner showed up for programs more often than anticipated, because they felt welcome. Many participants increased their engagement with communal life as a result of these initiatives, including becoming involved with synagogues, enrolling in Jewish preschools, and attending JCC holiday celebrations. They appreciated the opportunity to raise questions and have substantive conversations in a comfortable environment.

In a recent report, JFNA reflected:

“We are grateful to the National Center to Encourage Judaism for being our partner in this program. The funding helped us provide appealing venues, creative programs and enticing advertisements. Participants reflected how grateful they were to engage in meaningful Jewish programming that invited their families to be with us as a family in low-barrier and creative settings”

How the Pittsburgh JCC used “Field Trips” for Families to create an “on-ramp” to Judaism

For the second year NCEJ gave a grant to the JCCPGH to enable it to expand marketing for a series of 1-day “Family Holiday Camps”, geared primarily to intermarried families. This year the focus was on Shabbat, Chanukah, and Shavuot.

Each session consisted of numerous hands-on activities plus Jewish learning. The aim was to encourage the families to embrace Jewish living at home and also engage with Jewish life in Pittsburgh. Feedback from program participants highlighted that families appreciated the opportunity to spend time together in a relaxed atmosphere while also being able to connect with other families and the larger community.

Program Example: “Shabbat on the Ark”

Shabbat on the Ark, held in the fall, immersed families with young children in the story of parashat Noach. Families boarded the Gateway Clipper for a morning cruise, much like Noah boarded the ark, and experienced a family-friendly Torah service. Connecting to the story, most of the activities were animal-related, such as building animal toys out of paper towel tubes.

The Jewish message was: Torah stories can be relevant in our 21st century life and Torah should be read in public settings with fun, joy and purpose.

Have Ideas for a Program that Meshes with NCEJ’s Mission?

If you offer programs geared towards interfaith families and others who do not identify as Jewish, NCEJ might be able to help you widen your audience and connect more people to Judaism. The Kehillah is led by Rabbi Patrick Beaulier (Rabbi Patrick as he prefers to be known) and his wife, Rebbetzin Stefanie Papps. Rabbi Patrick is a former rock star who converted to Judaism.

The goal of the evening was to reach people in their 20s and 30s who might not be comfortable in a traditional synagogue setting. Some of the activities, aside from the usual food, candle lighting, and dreidels, included an “Ask-the-Rabbi” booth, and an information station with printed literature about Judaism and a Judaism for Beginners class. In order to promote the event, Rabbi Patrick placed ads in Richmond’s alternative weekly (which has a reach of 79K readers) and on Facebook.

Rabbi Patrick wrote of the very successful event:

“This grant will pay dividends for a long, long time.”

NCEJ’s grant will have a lasting impact and has enabled the Kehillah to:

Begin planning a “Boot up” a Judaism 101 series which they are already promoting via social media.

Create immediate interest from interfaith families in Jewish education for their children through their Family School (an innovative model of Jewish children’s education).

Gain interest in conversion to Judaism, to the point that they had to add a page to their website to answer information.

A few quotes from the night:

“I’m not Jewish, but my wife is. It’s so nice to see things in this area that are open to me where I feel welcome.”

“I know I’m part Jewish, but don’t know what to do with that. This gets me interested.”

“I haven’t done anything Jewish for twelve years until now.”

Rabbi Patrick also writes: “No amount of words can express how wonderful our Hanukkah celebration was and the impact that NCEJ has now made in our lives.”

An annual grant from NCEJ has enabled the organization to increase marketing and reach a wider audience.

The 36-week course is taught on a rotating basis by Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Orthodox rabbis, giving participants multiple perspectives. The average class size is 20-25 students. Each student is required to secure a rabbinic sponsor from one of the local congregations and meet the conversion requirements developed by his/her sponsor. Students gain an introduction to Judaism and a reading knowledge of Hebrew; participate in Shabbat, holiday, and ritual observances, and make connections with individual congregations and the larger community.

Post-Conversion Program

In 2018-2019, the Rabbinical Association for the first time is offering a post-conversion program to help new Jews-by-choice become more familiar with Jewish traditions and assist them in connecting with local congregations and the larger Jewish community. NCEJ is pleased to be supporting this innovative program.

Special outreach to interfaith families who are currently synagogue members along with unaffiliated interfaith families who may be seeking b’nai mitzvah outside the organized Jewish community will be made to identify participants for this seminar. Learn More

Grant News

Many other groups throughout the country are developing new approaches to welcome individuals, couples, and families who want to become part of the Jewish community. Here are a few examples:

Congregation Bnai Amoona, St Louis was awarded a marketing grant for its Introduction to Judaism class. Last year Bnai Amoona received a NCEJ advertising grant through the Rabbinic Assembly. It has offered a wide range of courses for newcomers to Judaism for many years.

The Rabbinical Association of Greater Kansas City just received a grant for a post-conversion program that will provide support to new Jews by choice. This is in addition to the grant they receive every year to promote their introduction to Judaism class.

JCC of Pittsburgh received another grant to promote a series of family holiday camps, following up on the success of last year’s Chanukah and Passover programs which attracted over 200 participants.

Temple Aliyah, a Conservative synagogue in Needham, MA is a first-time NCEJ grantee for a program entitled “Exploring the Joys of Shabbat, Purim, and Pesach through Jewish Food”.

Now, in addition, NCEJ is providing major marketing support for JHUB, the Cleveland Federation’s interfaith family outreach initiative.

JHUB was launched in 2014 to provide a way for interfaith couples and families to explore the meaning of Jewish culture and values in their lives, and strengthen their connections to Jewish communal life in Greater Cleveland. JHUB is a central resource for interfaith families to connect to each other and to Jewish Cleveland through social gatherings, holiday experiences, and Jewish learning. JHUB is a joint program of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland. It is also an affiliate of Interfaith Family.

Of the six grants given in 2017-2018, two of them were for regional conversion programs in which several synagogues collaborated. Interestingly, three subgrants were for synagogues in Canada.

The grants were publicized via email in the RA’s newsletter and other avenues as well as announced at conferences. Below is a summary of the key elements and special features of each grant awarded.

About the RA Subgrants

Program: “Spanish Language Conversion Services”

Temple Beth Israel: Broward County, Florida – Rabbi Hector Eppelbaum

Temple Bath Israel offers Jewish adult education and conversion courses to Spanish speakers. They are the sole providers of Spanish language conversion services in Broward County. The curriculum is based on the curricula of the Conversion Institute of the Rabbinical Assembly of America Southeast Region. They run two 20 session courses each year. As students progress through the program they become active participants in the congregation and the Jewish community. Two of the students who went through the conversion class are currently members of the synagogue Board.

Program: “Introduction to Judaism, With a Mentoring Rabbi”

RA of Philadelphia: Goodblatt Academy – Rabbi Neil Cooper

The Goodblatt Academy offers an Introduction to Judaism program that runs for 30 sessions. In addition to attending formal classes, students are paired with a mentoring rabbi who they meet with monthly. As part of the program, the Academy sponsors a catered Shabbat dinner and encourages students to bring their families. Traditionally the Academy has relied on local rabbis to refer prospective students to them. Increasingly though, prospective students are finding information online, which leads them to the Academy’s website. NCEJ grant funds have been used to advertise the program with a more sophisticated website and place ads in the Philadelphia Inquirer, community newspapers and on social media and to defray the costs of the Shabbat dinner and childcare.

Program: “Introduction to Judaism, With Program Alumni”

Temple B’nai Amoona: St Louis, MO – Rabbi Carnie Rose

The centerpiece of B’nai Amoona’s efforts to encourage interest in Judaism is the Introduction to Judaism course. This year B’nai Amoona has begun to match students in this course with other B’nai Amoona members who have gone through the conversion process and can serve as guides and mentors. Regular meetings also occur with the Senior Rabbi and the teacher. Marketing for the class includes information in the monthly congregational newsletter and the weekly Shabbat Bulletin sent via email along with the regular ads in the Jewish in St Louis website; the NCEJ grant also covered the cost of materials for the course.

Program: “Keeping the Faith”

Toronto RA Region: Rabbi Adam Cutler

Keeping the Faith is an initiative designed to maintain and deepen the connection between recent converts (their Jewish partners) and the Jewish community. There is a weekly Mommy and Me program for recent converts and partners with babies; a convert and mother-in-law cooking class is currently being planned; and a bi-monthly learning is also about to start. Under discussion is a Shabbat morning ‘increase your prayer fluency’ course targeted to recent converts but open to all (which is better for the converts’ ultimate integration into the community). The Toronto RA Region will soon be launching a website.

Program: “Learners Seder”

Congregation Beth Tikvah: Toronto – Rabbi Louis Sachs

The local RA region runs an Introduction to Judaism class, to which all the RA rabbis in Toronto send potential conversion students. Many current students, and some past students, do not have a place to go for a Seder. A learners Seder was hosted on the second night of Pesach for individuals going through the conversion process or recently having completed it. Even for those partnered, many of their families do not do a Seder on the second night, again leaving them without a place to go and celebrate. Some find these Seder “hosts” experiences can be intimidating and leave students feeling negative about the experience. Therefore, subsidizing the cost of meals for students looking for a “learners” Seder with other individuals going through the same process helps. The grant covered the cost of haggadot, food, and staff, making it affordable for them to attend.

Program: “Second Night Adult Seder”

Congregation Beth Israel: Vancouver – Rabbi Adam Stein

Congregation Beth Israel runs a conversion program from September to June each year which is being marketing on Facebook and in local media (Jewish and mainstream). The Congregation also hosts three Shabbat dinners a year for the conversion class, as well as a second night adult Seder to encourage conversion students (and their partners for those who have) to attend. Scholarships are also provided for those who request them for the Shabbat dinners and the Seder.

A key focus of these grants will be on programs that can be replicated. WRJ rolled out the program to sisterhoods in April 2017. WRJ created a dedicated Outreach page featuring their grant program partnership with NCEJ and publicized the program through various marketing techniques in order to encourage applications from affiliates. As a result of these efforts, thousands of people were reached through WRJ’s weekly newsletter and their social media sites. This publicity has developed significant interest in the Outreach grants from WRJ sisterhoods all over the U.S.

For more information on this program, contact WRJ Program & Communications Associate Micaela Sheinhait at msheinhait@wrj.org or 212-650-4060.

Awarded Affiliate Program Highlights

WRJ Sisterhood: Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood, Dallas, TX
Program: “Navigating the Religion Decision: A Workshop for Interfaith Couples”

Navigating the Religion Decision is a 6-session workshop to help interfaith couples have healthy discussions about faith. The course will help guide couples struggling with the religious identity of their future home towards a win-win decision where each other’s religious needs are met. The goal for the couples that choose a Jewish path is for them to go on to the congregation’s other programs for engaged and recently married couples making a Jewish home. This provides the opportunity to connect with other newly engaged/married couples, and allow them to build a relationship with a rabbi.

The 6-session workshop, facilitated by a professional couples’ counselor, will focus on shaping a healthy religious identity in an interfaith home. It will help participants understand the complexity of religious backgrounds, articulate what their religion means to them and what their religious needs are, how to relate to parents and extended family, transmitting a religious identity to children, and get to a solution or commitment for their children’s religious upbringing.

WRJ Sisterhood: Sisterhood of Temple Shalom, Newton, MA
Program: “Becoming Miriam”

Becoming Miriam is a program series to drive greater personal and community engagement with Jewish life, building upon the themes of Pesach and the Seder. This program is designed as a series of education and engagement events with the following goals:

Appeal to those who are “New to Jewish” or feel on the fringes of Jewish life

Reduce barriers to entry, and use various approaches to appeal to different types of people

Build familiarity and comfort with the traditions of the Seder

Increase knowledge about ways to make the Seder rich and lively for families of all kinds

Articulate and affirm the ways that extended families and community members, whether or not they are Jewish, can be made welcome and included

Help women articulate and select those traditions that they want to foster in their own homes, increasing a sense of personal ownership of Jewish life

Build interpersonal relationships among women of various generations and synagogue cohorts (e.g. mature women and those with young children) to increase engagement within the synagogue

Five congregations will be/are offering the course for the first time. Of the seven synagogues/clusters of congregations that had offered “Intro” in the past, some had not offered the course in many years or their courses were significantly briefer than 18 weeks. The NCEJ-URJ marketing grants will further enable these synagogues to publicize their “Intro” classes and provide a deeper experience for participants.

The communities that received these marketing grant are diverse. One congregation has a large membership, a few are medium-sized, and many are small. In fact, at least two congregations have fewer than 100 members each. The classes are being/will be held throughout the United States and one in Berlin, Germany. In two communities, coalitions of congregations have been forged to offer a collaborative consortium class.

“With deep gratitude to the National Center to Encourage Judaism, the URJ will be able to market “Introduction to Judaism” to a broader population. Through your partnership with us, this transformational program can impact even more people. We thank the NCEJ for your part in this endeavor, as do the synagogues and consortia of congregations.”

Recent Feedback from Participants

Two couples who recently finished taking an Introduction to Judaism class, and whose partner from another faith tradition decided to convert, illustrate the impact of “Introduction to Judaism” classes, below:

“I cannot even begin to explain what an AMAZING experience this was for me and my fiancé. We loved this class so much and looked forward to Wednesday nights every week. From Day #1 the teachers were so nice, so welcoming, so down-to-earth cool, so knowledgeable, that we felt a strong connection to everyone. We are going to really miss this class but look forward to keeping in touch with everyone.”

“Wish we could keep meeting each week. Love these classes!“

The course also profoundly impacts Jewish partners in interfaith relationships:

“The main reason I took the class was because my fiancé is converting. However, I am now soooo excited to be even ‘more Jewish’ and celebrate all the holidays, Shabbat, services, etc. I even told my brothers and family that they should take a class like this in the cities where they live. I did not expect to love this class the way I did, and I am very eager and excited to keep up even more the Jewish practice in our household (we’ve already started to!).”

After taking “Intro”, parents raising Jewish children decide to convert:

“I thought the class was perfect. Very well done… I took the class to help raise my children. Now I want to live as a Jew.”
